About
The Backstory of Upcycle
Upcycle was born out of a deep passion to inspire others to rethink how we approach waste and to find personal growth through this journey. Founded in 2010 by Winnie McHenry, Upcycle was her second venture, sparked by the realization that what many consider “junk” could be transformed into valuable resources. This shift in perspective expanded beyond materials—it became about people. Winnie saw that just as materials could be given new purpose, people from all walks of life, especially those facing disadvantage, could be empowered by learning to see possibilities where others saw obstacles.
Over the years, Upcycle has grown into a movement that intertwines product development with personal development. Our mission has evolved to encompass not only the creation of beautiful, functional products from discarded materials but also to create pathways for sustained livelihoods, particularly for those in struggling communities. By addressing both environmental and social challenges, we’ve become more than just a business—we’re a catalyst for change.
The core of our success lies in advocating for a shift in how businesses think about waste management, emphasizing the importance of social impact and environmental sustainability in corporate culture. Our work has proven that when businesses embrace these values, the results are transformational. Through consistent advocacy, training, and commitment, Upcycle has seen corporate partners adopt upcycling practices, creating demand for innovative, eco-friendly products while fostering inclusivity and diversity within their cultures.
At the heart of Upcycle is a model of mentorship that empowers people to become entrepreneurs without needing large financial investments upfront. By equipping individuals with the skills and knowledge to start their own businesses, we are creating ripples of positive impact in communities around the world.
This success has paved the way for the creation of the “Upcycle Foundation,” an NGO dedicated to expanding our mission. Through this initiative, we provide ongoing mentorship and coaching, helping individuals elevate the skills they’ve gained from Upcycle training to the next level. By supporting these individuals on their journey from unemployment to becoming self-sustaining entrepreneurs, we are advancing our goal of empowering people to break free from cycles of poverty and realize their full potential.
Upcycle’s story is one of transformation—of materials, of people, and of communities. Through innovation, creativity, and a steadfast belief in the power of possibility, we continue to inspire change, one upcycled creation at a time.
Meet our amazing team.
“At Upcycle, our team is more than just a group of individuals—we’re a collective of passionate changemakers, each dedicated to transforming not only discarded materials but also the lives of those we work with. Every member of our team brings a unique set of skills, creativity, and a shared commitment to empowering communities, fostering sustainability, and creating lasting impact. Meet the people who drive our mission forward and inspire change every day.”
