Training on how to upcycle glass bottles into products.
Turning Waste Glass into Skills, Products, and Opportunity
Across South Africa, glass waste continues to accumulate while communities face rising unemployment. This training changes that dynamic by transforming an everyday waste problem into a practical economic opportunity.
At Upcycle, we train participants to see glass not as waste, but as a valuable resource. Through structured, hands-on learning, discarded bottles, jars, and broken glass are turned into functional products that can be sold, used, or scaled into small businesses.
Why Glass Training Matters
Glass is one of the most accessible waste streams in both urban and rural environments. At the same time, it offers high potential for value creation when combined with the right skills. Therefore, this programme focuses on materials that are already available in the communities where we work. As a result, participants leave with the ability to continue producing long after the training ends, without relying on external supply chains. In addition, organisations benefit by supporting visible waste diversion while creating meaningful community impact.

What Participants Learn
The training is designed as a practical, production-focused programme. Participants develop both technical skills and creative confidence while working with real materials.
They learn how to:
- Cut and shape glass bottles safely and accurately
- Transform bottles into tumblers and drinking glasses
- Create candle holders, including floating candle designs
- Design and assemble glass light fittings, including basic wiring
- Produce planters using different bottle shapes and finishes
- Work with flat glass and broken mirror for mosaic applications
- Drill, polish, bevel, and finish glass for professional-quality products
- Apply decorative techniques such as staining, painting, and texturing
Importantly, the programme moves beyond crafting. It introduces design thinking and product development so participants understand how to create items that people actually want to buy.
From Waste to Marketable Products
Throughout the training, participants produce a range of finished items, including glass tumblers, candle holders, decorative light fittings, planters, wind chimes, and mosaic art.
Each product is developed with quality and market relevance in mind. Consequently, participants begin to understand pricing, presentation, and customer appeal, key elements for income generation.
Training Approach
This is a 40-day structured programme that combines theory with hands-on production.
Participants progress from foundational skills, such as glass cutting and safety, into more advanced techniques like polishing, drilling, and electrical integration for lighting.
At the same time, the learning environment encourages experimentation. Participants are guided to explore new ideas, develop their own product variations, and build confidence through repetition and practice.
Tools and Business Readiness
The programme also prepares participants to continue working independently after completion.
They are introduced to the essential tools required to start a small glass upcycling business, including cutters, sanding tools, and basic workshop equipment.
This ensures that the training does not end in the classroom. Instead, it creates a pathway into self-employment, micro-enterprise development, or integration into existing production initiatives.
Environmental and Social Impact
By supporting this training, organisations actively contribute to reducing glass waste sent to landfill while creating real economic opportunities.
Participants gain practical skills, confidence, and the ability to generate income from materials that are freely available in their environment.
Moreover, the impact is visible. Waste materials are physically transformed into products, and participants leave with tangible proof of their skills.
A Scalable Solution for Corporate and NGO Partners
This programme is designed to be implemented across different communities and adapted to local waste streams.
Whether delivered as part of an enterprise development initiative, a sustainability programme, or a community upliftment project, it offers measurable outcomes including people trained, waste diverted, products created, and small businesses launched.
As a result, partners are able to demonstrate both environmental responsibility and meaningful social investment.
