How to Make a Big Fabric Pom-Pom: Upcycle Old Fabric Scraps

Got fabric scraps lying around? Instead of throwing them away, why not turn them into something fun and decorative? This tutorial will show you how to make a large fabric pom-pom using old fabric pieces. It’s a simple and creative way to upcycle materials while adding a playful touch to your home décor!

Materials You’ll Need:

  • Fabric scraps (cotton or other non-fraying fabrics work best)
  • Scissors
  • A large circular template (you can use a bowl, lid, or anything round)
  • String or twine

Step-by-Step Guide:

Step 1: Gather Your Fabric Scraps

Start by gathering all the fabric scraps you have. This project is perfect for those small pieces you’ve been holding onto but didn’t know how to use. The variety in colors and patterns will give your pom-pom a unique look!

Step 2: Cut Fabric into Strips

Take your scissors and cut the fabric scraps into strips. Aim for strips about 1.5 to 2 cm wide and at least 20 cm long. If your fabric is fraying, you can use pinking shears to prevent edges from unraveling.

Step 3: Create a Circular Base

Find a circular object to use as a template. Place it on a piece of fabric or cardboard and trace around it. Cut out two large circles. These will serve as the base to wrap your fabric strips around.

Step 4: Start Wrapping

Take one of your fabric strips and begin wrapping it around the circular template. You don’t need to be too precise; just keep going until you’ve wrapped enough fabric to create a fluffy, full pom-pom. The more fabric you use, the fuller your pom-pom will be!

Step 5: Secure the Middle

Once your fabric is wrapped, take a piece of string or twine and tie it around the middle of the wrapped fabric, pulling it tightly. Double-knot it to make sure it’s secure.

Step 6: Fluff and Shape

Now, carefully cut the loops of fabric along the edges, releasing the fabric strips. Fluff up your pom-pom by pulling apart the fabric pieces, trimming any uneven edges to create a round, even shape.

Step 7: Display Your Pom-Pom

Your fabric pom-pom is now complete! Hang it as a playful piece of décor, add it to gift wrapping, or string several together to make a garland.
